Game 1: Wranglers 6, Grizzlies 4

It was said last night that every goalie has a bad game, and Mikko sure picked a bad time to have his. While we agree, with this, we can't heap the loss solely on Koskinen. Outside of some random officiating, the team we saw in the 3rd period was not the same team we saw in the 1st.

The Grizzlies dominated the 1st, starting the scoring just 0:35 into the period with a goal from MacMillan. The Wranglers tied things up later to end the initial frame 1-1. Utah gained the lead in the 2nd with two quick goals to make it 3-1, but Las Vegas responded with 4 straight of their own, which ended with Mikko being replaced by Morrison in net. Morrison stopped a penalty shot and ended the period without allowing another goal, 5-3.

In the 3rd, the Grizzlies attempted to decrease the deficit with an early goal, but it was waved off for high sticking. Morrison stopped another penalty shot allotted to the Wranglers, but later Vegas increased their lead to 6-3. Utah added one more goal to stop the bleeding, but the game still ended in the Wrangler's favor, 6-4.

The Grizzlies made it 3-1 just 1:23 later at 1:43 as Sixsmith fed Matt Clarke in the circle again. Clarke’s shot was redirected home by Tim Crowder and Utah had a 3-1 lead. However, starting at the 5:16 mark, Las Vegas rattled off four-straight scores to take a 5-3 lead. [utahgrizzlies.com]

What Worked Well: 1st period
The Grizzlies absolutely dominated the first period. The boys played strong and kept control of the puck; they were playing to win. If they could have kept up this pace for the full 60, we would have seen a very different game.

What Could Have Worked Better: Staying out of the box
Yes, we agree that the officiating was not the best, but really. The Grizzlies racked up 8 penalties to the Wranglers' 4. While the PK took care of business, the 16 minutes of of penalty time didn't help Utah when it came to adding on their lead.

Who Made the Difference: James Sixsmith
While we do want to comment on the the great game that Tim Maxwell had, James Sixsmith showed up to win all three periods. Setting up some great goals, Sixer ended the game with 3 assists and looked alive out there for the full 60 minutes. Nicely done.

> While we don't mean to pick on anyone in particular, we just have to say: Kinasewich, the next time you have 0:26 left in a power play, please don't waste 0:10 of that dilly-dallying in your own end. You had open ice and you have the speed (not to mention a wicked shot), please use it.

Post Game: Grizzlies 7, Condors 4

Utah piled on 7 goals for their 2 points, but the Condors definitely kept things interesting for the Grizzlies during this match up.

Bakersfield struck first for the second night in a row 5:01 into the 1st. The Grizzlies responded on the power play to tie things before the end of the period, 1-1. At the top of the 2nd, Perry gave Utah their first lead of the night, but the Condors were quick to respond and tie it once again, 2-2. The Grizzlies regained their lead with a goal from Clarke, then another from Hunter to build their lead before the end of the middle frame, 4-2.

In the 3rd, Utah increased their lead to 3 with a goal from May. The Condors quickly followed up with two of their own, bringing the deficit to a single goal, 5-4. But the Grizzlies tacked on two more goals, one from Sixsmith and the final goal from Kinasewich, to expand on their lead and seal the deal, 7-4.

The Utah Grizzlies (32-28-4-5) defeated the Bakersfield Condors 7-4 Saturday night at the E-Center before 7,772 fans. The win guarantees Utah a winning season and their fourth season of .500 or better in the last five years.

What Worked Well: Taking the puck to the net
Unfortunately, we don't have a replay of every goal, but a good handful of those goals came from taking the puck deep and right up to the net: Perry, May, Sixsmith - all had goals by swooping down right in front of the net. Nice work.

What Could Have Worked Better: Staying out of the box
The Grizzlies didn't allow Bakersfield as many chances as they did last night, but it's still something that could use a little improvement. There were also a couple of ill-timed penalties, including a shorthanded 5-on-3 situation that probably could have been avoided.

Who Made the Difference: James Sixsmith
While we saw a pretty sweet game from the Grizzlies, James Sixsmith definitely lead the pack tonight. With two goals and an assist on the gamewinner, Sixer was continually in the right place at the right time and propelling all the Grizzlies forward.

Post Game: Reign 5, Grizzlies 3.

Ontario drew first blood with a short handed goal 1:44 into the 1st. Utah was able to hold the Reign's tally to a single goal through the rest of the period, then opened the 2nd with two goals of their own to take the lead. However, a minute later, the Reign tallied two goals to tie it, then regain the lead. Late in the 2nd, Ontario added an additional goal to end the period 4-2.

Utah attempted to battle back but was not able to bridge the 2 goal gap, even with the help of a 5-on-3 power play. Both Ontario and Utah scored on power plays late in the 3rd to end the game in Ontario's favor, 5-3.

The Grizzlies had 1:21 of five-on-three power-play time to start the third period, but were unable to score and the Grizzlies then preceded to commit three minors, one of which was taken advantage of by the Reign who buried a goal to extend their lead to 5-2 at 11:15 of the third period. What We Think Worked Well: Perry-Hunter-Kinasewich
This line was responsible for all goals scored during this game, 7 of the 8 points earned by the Grizzlies, and 11 out of 31 SOG. We can't deny (nor would we want to) that this line works incredibly well together.

What Could Have Worked Better: Power Play
The Grizzlies have a sizzling power play when they're on, but when it's off, it's completely past the mark. Both Ontario and Utah went 1/6 on the power play and neither were able to capitalize on 5-on-3 situations. However, the Grizzlies had a hard time controling the puck, keeping it in, and even allowed a shorty during their first power play of the night. Maybe we've been spoiled, but compared to the last few games, this definitely could have worked much better for the Grizzlies.

Who Made the Difference: Brock Wilson
Even though we really can't say enough about Captain Kinasewich's star-of-the-game performance in this game, we have to give props to Brock Wilson for his crazy, long-ass, helmet-less shift. He played a good game and took care of business. Check it out:

Definitely in the top 3 best game moments for us (other two: the first Kinasewich goal, Hughes sticking up for himself). Props to Brock.

Utah Grizzlies vs Idaho Steelheads 1/13/10

We just want to say that Mitch O'Keefe is a rock star.

O'Keefe ended the night with 38 saves, and most of those were pretty damn incredible. Other highlights from the game included random goals by Kinasewich and Crowder (we'll take it), and a nice wrap around goal from May. Not to mention the luckiest 1st for the Grizzlies who spent the period playing defense, but still kept their lead intact.

FIRST PERIOD

Utah goes on the power play a minute in; May comes from behind the net with a wrap around goal. Perry picks up the only assist. Then, the boys spend the rest of the 1st in their own end. Between penalty kills and a lackluster 5-on-5 performance, O'Keefe and company spend the rest of the period defending their one goal lead. 12 SOG for Idaho compared to Utah's 3. Utah gets a power play at the end of the period, but the aggressive work by Idaho on the penalty kill gives them no chances before time runs out.

End of first. 1-0, Grizzlies.

SECOND PERIOD

Grizzlies start the 2nd still on the power play. Randomly, Kinasewich scores from behind the blueline :26 in; the puck bounced off the goalie and went in, 2-0. Hand and Huxley drop the gloves and dance. Huxley got a few more punches in, but Hand gets the takedown. You can see the replay on the ISH site. Idaho scores off of their first shot this period. Pavli gets called for boarding, then Parnham joins him giving Idaho the shortest 5-on-3 ever. The Grizzlies kill the first penalty, but Idaho scores on the second to tie it up. By the end of the period, the Grizzlies looked like they could use the intermission to break up Idaho's momentum.

End of second. 2-2.

THIRD PERIOD

Idaho takes the lead a minute in. With no SOG for Utah 6:40 in, it doesn't seem like the boys showed up to play this period. Then, Crowder hacks it toward the net and ties it up. We didn't expect that; he looked like he was about to trip. The boys are re-energized and push it into OT. Some of the best play of the game came as a result of the Crowder goal. The Grizzlies pick up a point.

End of third. 3-3.

OVERTIME

Both teams are going all out for this one. Grizzlies get a penalty with 30 seconds left, and Idaho takes a time out before the 4-on-3. O'Keefe makes some awesome saves, and time runs out.

End of overtime. 3-3.

SHOOT OUT

Idaho gets two, Grizzlies get none.

Utah Grizzlies vs Alaska Aces Post Game 1/6/10

The Grizzlies have somehow incurred the wrath of the hockey gods.

Well, maybe not, but we have no other explanation for the Grizzlies' 3rd periods as of late. Minus that last 20 minutes and the casualties (Hunter and Vlady), Utah played a good game. Multi-point nights for Kinasewich, Crowder, and May, some beautiful glove saves by O'Keefe, and a couple of decent fights from RJ. Not bad. And it turns out, Kotsy is one tough cookie to play against. But we kind of already knew that . . .

It was nice to see Hunter in a Grizzlies uniform again - for the 18 minutes he was on the ice, anyway. We'd forgotten how well Dylan and Snatch worked together: like a well-oiled machine, baby. We expected there to be at least a game's worth of adjustment time, but they were skating circles as soon as the puck hit the ice.

FIRST PERIOD

Apparently the 1st period started out with a fight, but we missed it because the B2 was being a pain. No luck finding highlights, either. We tuned in just in time to see Kotsy take out Beljo with a huge hit. Beljo bounced back ready to go, but the refs broke it up after a short shoving match. Boo. Utah is having no problem controlling the puck, and most of the 1st is spent in Alaska's end. At 18 minutes in, Hunter gets a breakaway, but is taken out by Alaska and slides/crashes into the boards. No call. Snatch kept the play alive, shooting it toward the net where Maxwell knocked it in to put the Grizzlies on the board. A very pretty goal. But Hunter is out for the rest of the game.

End of first. 1-0, Grizzlies.


SECOND PERIOD

This period was littered with more bodies than a Tarantino film. 4 minutes in, Vlady is smacked in the face with a stick and goes down. Casualty #2 for the Grizzlies. Blood on the ice; Vlady's a tough kid, though. Alaska gets a double minor for high-sticking, but the Grizzlies do nothing with their 4 minutes. (No, we're not kidding.) During the power play, Alaska's Burt blocks a puck and is injured in the process. RJ goes for fight #2 of the night. Galbraith is checked head first into the boards by a former teammate, and O'Keefe gets mowed down in the net during that same run. Somewhere in there, Alaska ties it up. But Utah responds with 1.3 seconds left in the period to regain the lead. Crowder's second goal of the season and points to May and Snatch for the assists. Nice.

End of second. 2-1, Grizzlies.


THIRD PERIOD

Utah flounders on the ice. Alaska scores 4 goals. Carpentier tallies with :11 left in the 3rd, but the Grizzlies run out of time.

Game.
5-3, Aces.


Kinasewich was the 2nd Star of the Game.

Utah Grizzlies vs Bakersfield Condors Post Game 12/19/09

By now the entire hockey world heard about Condor goalie Pielmeier's empty netter. Which, if we're going to be honest, was pretty damn amazing.

Unfortunately, what will be overlooked is the incredible physical presence that the Grizzlies brought to the ice in the 3rd period. It seemed to be sparked by the 2nd Kinasewich goal, then fueled by his ejection from the game. The boys dominated the Condors throughout the 3rd, and even though they still came up with a loss, they showed the variety of play we'd like to see consistantly. The Condors had been playing a very different team up to that 3rd period; they didn't know exactly what to do once they had a real game on their hands. When Clarke Phaneufs some guy at the blueline and looks happy about it - game on!

We're taking that 3rd period as a sign that there are some happy wins around the corner. Snatch had 2 goals before being ejected, and Maxwell had 3 assists which is a new career high for the blueliner.

There were definitively less penalties this game as opposed to last game.

However, May opens it up on the first power play with a goal. 1-0.

So, we actually got to watch the game.

But without pictures, it's hard to remember exactly how things went down . . .

Grizzlies got another power play, but couldn't do anything with it.

Penalties increase in this period.

Overall, a sad period for Utah.

Captain Kinasewich waits for penalties to be assessed.

Brooks and Condors Stoflet and Weller get roughing.

Hugo gets boarding. 5 minutes.

Later, Snatch goes to the box for slashing.

Bakersfield scores. 4-2.

Bakersfield gets a penalty.

Grizzlies will start the 3rd with a shortened power play.

End of second. 4-2, Condors.

THIRD PERIOD

Snatch scores 0:21 in to the 3rd on the power play. 4-3.

Points to Maxwell and Vlady on the assists.

Pavli goes to the box for roughing.

Bakersfield capitalizes. 5-3.

Gannon gets a minor for holding.

Kinasewich mouths off and gets himself Unsportsmanlike conduct, Misconduct, and Game misconduct - Abuse of officials.

We can't even remember the whole goal situation that led to this.

Anyway, the Grizzlies come off of that goal/penalty fallout turbo-charged.

They are skating circles around the Condors, who start to pick up some penalties.

Utah Grizzlies vs Ontario Reign Post Game 12/2/09

So, Grizzlies win.

But 40 minutes of this game was all Ontario.

Seriously. Utah gave up 3 goals within the last 3 minutes of the game. And if you look at the SOG for the 2nd and 3rd period, Ontario had twice as many as Utah. Ontario's Hogeboom, who's name sounds like a Harry Potter character, got a (magic) hat trick and tied the game late in the 3rd.

Talk about negating an amazing 1st period.

We're not even sure how to approach this one. All of the europhoria we felt after the first period dissipated halfway through the 2nd. Fortunately, Maxwell was there in OT to save the day.

It wasn't all bad for the Grizzlies. Kinasewich had 4 assists, Vlady had 3 assists, Hunter had 2 goals, and Perry, Bartley, and Parnham all had multipoint games. Utah had 7 goals in total for the night with 22 SOG and 5 of those goals occurring in the 1st period.

We knew we would come out strong, but we didn't expect this.

5 goals in the 1st period.

Hell, we're just going to list them and call it good since Ontario only had 2 SOG in the 1st.

Clarke opens it up on his first night back in the line.

Parnham picks up his 4th of the year.

Kinasewich and Perry with the assists on that one.

Hunter's first goal of the night.

Snatch's second assist of the night.

May gets his 7th of the season.

Guthrie and Vlady pick up the assists.

Oh, and May got in a fight somewhere in there, too.

Other than the lackluster hits, the Grizzlies looked like they were an AHL team competing against Ontario.

Not. Even. Kidding.

Incredible.

SECOND PERIOD

Apparently it doesn't take much to upset the Grizzlies momentum.

Winning will do it.

Geez.

Ontario comes out strong.

3 goals in 3.5 minutes.

And one of those was a penalty shot.

What the hell happened?

Bartley gets one to stop the bleeding.

Parnham and Vlady get the assists on that.

But this is no where near the team we saw in the 1st.

End of second. 6-3, Grizzlies.

THIRD PERIOD

We're not even going to talk about this period.

Except . . .

Ontario = awe-inspiring.

Even if you hate them, any team that can come up with 3 goals in the last 3 minutes of a game is impressive.

Utah's defense crumbled.

We looked around the internet for some video footage of this but can't find any yet.

What a rally for Ontario.

End of third. 6-6.

OVERTIME

We're sure by this point, Colley was already carving stakes for heads and the boys knew it.

Losing really wasn't an option.

Utah gets a power play, and Maxwell gets the game winner.

Points to Vlady and Snatch on the assists.

NOTES

So, we were complaining to ourselves that we didn't say enough about our blueliners last week, and now we've got mixed reviews.

3 of the 7 goals were from Utah defensemen: Clarke, Bartley, Maxwell.

Which means our defensemen are amazing offensively.

However, 3 goals were allowed in the last 3 minutes of the 3rd.

What exactly does that say about our blueliners defensively?

We'll leave that to Colley and Curcio.

Game Day - Utah Grizzlies vs. Las Vegas Wranglers

After a couple of losses at home to the Idaho Steelheads, the Grizzlies head back to Vegas to roll the dice against the Wranglers again. We'd say maybe they're rolling the dice at the craps table too while they're down there, but most of the team isn't old enough for that.



The last time these two teams met up, the Grizzlies came away with a win in their season opener, and Ryan (GQ) Kinasewich had a hat trick. Not a bad start. Despite the losses to Idaho, the Grizz are still a talented team with a lot of energy, and if they can minimize the mistakes they can have a repeat of the previous match-up in Sin City.



The Wranglers have just come off a loss and two wins against the Alaska Aces, and will be looking for that momentum to help them in tonight's game. We went to their Preview link on their website and this is what it looked like:

What the heck is their mascot supposed to be anyway?


We can tell you that Las Vegas will be missing goaltender Michael Ouzas and also Shay Stephenson - both are suspended. Probably for underage gambling. (Just kidding - they're both old.) We can also tell you that the Grizzlies are third in the ECHL on the power play at 25% (4 for 16). Pavli and Stoflet will be out tonight so that Tim Maxwell and Jason Dale can make their season debuts. And if you read what Adrian Denny wrote in his game-day blog over at the Grizzlies' website, it sounds like the team got a butt-chewing from Colley. If we were hockey chefs, we could tell you what all that would taste like when your threw it into a soup together...

But we're not. We're just going to tune in and listen to the game like the rest of you who weren't able to go to Vegas for the game because you have regular jobs and stuff. So I guess we'll all have to see what happens tonight.
