Game 1: Steelheads 7, Grizzlies 2

Against a team like Idaho, the Grizzlies just can't bank on that miracle 3rd period we've become accustomed to in the last half of the season.

The Steelheads picked up the first two goals of the game at 13:02 and 13:55 in the 1st. Utah responded before the end of the period with a goal of their own, 2-1. In the 2nd, Idaho struck at 13:02 again with another goal, then increased the deficit on the power play before the Grizzlies scored a power play goal of their own to make it 4-2 heading into the 3rd period.

In the 3rd period, Idaho scored 3 goals in approximately 1 1/2 minutes, which resulted in Morrison being replaced in net with Stehrenberger who stopped all 10 shots he saw. Utah struggled to close the 5 goal gap but to no avail. The game ended 7-2 in Idaho's favor.

What Worked Well: Penalty Kill
The penalty kill was one of the only times the Grizzlies looked alive on the ice during this match. Killing a 5-on-3 and only dropping 1 out of 8, the PK put up some amazing defense to kill off the shorthanded situations Utah continually found themselves in. If Utah had this sort of determination during 5-on-5 situations, this would have been a different game.

What Could Have Worked Better: Staying out of the box
The high penalty count seems to be happening on a pretty regular basis. We don't like it. It takes the boys away from the business of scoring goals and leaves them - for the most part - stuck in their own end. Clean it up, please.

Who Made the Difference: Mike Morrison
While Mike did get pulled in the 3rd, we're guessing it was not soley because of the 7 goals, but to give the poor kid a rest. Morrison stood on his head in the match and made plenty of amazing saves. He's the reason the score was only 4-2 going into the 3rd and considering some of those saves, we're honestly surprised there were only 7 goals allowed rather than 14.

Stars of the Game:

1. IDH - M. McCutcheon
2. IDH - M. McKnight
3. IDH - M. Tousignant

Additional Notes:

> Mike Morrison stopped 35 out or 42 in the match. Stehrenberger stopped 10 of 10 that he saw.
> We really can't think of any additional notes here . . .

Post Game: Grizzlies 5, Salmon Kings 2

With a solid 3rd period, the Grizzlies were able to wrap up their regular season with a win and a home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Utah picked up an early lead 0:24 seconds into the initial frame with a goal from Dylan Hunter. Victoria responded 5 minutes later with one of their own and the game remained tied during the 1st, 1-1. The Grizzlies grabbed the lead again in the 2nd, with another goal from their top line, but the Salmon Kings tied it up again and the teams headed into the final frame 2-2.

In the 3rd, the Grizzlies dominated the period to wrap the game up nicely. Starting with a Kinasewich goal, Utah picked up 3 goals in this period to end the game 5-2 in their favor.

From the official post game:

Utah captain Ryan Kinasewich started a third period three-goal in 4:17 barrage as he took a setup from Dylan Hunter 3:42 into the frame to give Utah a 3-2 lead on his league-leading 48th goal of the season. 18 seconds later, Tim Crowder knocked in his tenth goal of the year to make it 4-2 as Utah capped off their fastest back-to-back goals this year. VIC L. Morrison (4), 5:06 1st period (Southern, Walsky); Grizzlies 1, Salmon Kings 1
UTA A. Perry (30), 5:57 2nd period (Hunter, Kinasewich); Grizzlies 2, Salmon Kings 1

UTA T. Crowder (11), 4:00 3rd period (Sixsmith); Grizzlies 4, Salmon Kings 2
UTA S. McJannet (4), 7:59 3rd period (MacMillan, Galbraith); Grizzlies 5, Salmon Kings 2

What Worked Well: 3rd period
If the Grizzlies were looking to wrap the season up nice and tidy, they did with their domination of the 3rd period. 3 goals came in this final frame to give them the win, and the boys worked to keep the Salmon Kings from responding.

What Could Have Worked Better: Power Play
Going 0 for 4 on the power play, the boys had problems controlling the puck and allowed Victoria to tie things up with a short handed goal. Isn't Utah supposed to have the best power play in the league? Do it better.

Who Made the Difference: Mikko Koskinen
Utah would not have withstood the first 2 periods of this game without Mikko's help in the net. Not to mention his work stopping all 13 shots in the 3rd period of the game, which allowed Utah to grab the win.

Stars of the Game:

1. UTA - R. Kinasewich
2. VIC - E. Walsky
3. UTA - M. Koskinen

Additional Notes:

> Dylan Hunter extended his scoring streak to 13 games.
> Captain Ryan Kinasewich ends the regular season with 48 goals, 103 points, and 322 SOG.
> Utah gains home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs with the win.

Post Game: Salmon Kings 9, Grizzlies 2

Adrian Denny had it right: this was a game to forget. The Grizzlies made the playoffs then abruptly forgot how to play.

Utah started the scoring with a power play goal from Hunter early in the 1st. However, the Grizzlies wouldn't see the back of the net again until the end of the 2nd. Victoria tacked on 7 goals (2 in the 1st, 5 in the 2nd) before Utah responded at 19:06 of the 2nd with Kinasewich's 47th of the year. The captain's goal also broke the team record for most goals scored in a season.

During the 3rd, Victoria tallied two more goals to end the game wildly in their favor, 9-2. Barfjob.

What Worked Well: Erm . . .
Unlike Wednesday's game where we had a hard time finding anything that went wrong, with this game we had a hard time figuring out anything that went right. It was a little depressing that Kinasewich picked up the season high record for goals during such a sad display.

What Could Have Worked Better: Everything
Where do we begin? The boys simply fell apart on the ice and didn't bother to try to get it back together. We expect a better effort tomorrow, Grizzlies, and we hope you're adequately ashamed of yourselves.

Who Made the Difference: Dylan Hunter . . . we guess
Dylan was the only Grizzly to have a multipoint game tonight, so we selected him by default. Um . . . yeah. Woo, Dylan.

Stars of the Game:

1. VIC - W. Goldie
2. VIC - M. Siddall
3. VIC - C. Painchaud

Additional Notes:

> Dylan Hunter (1g, 1a) was the only Grizzly to have a multiple point game.
> Ryan Kinasewich broke the team season record for goals during the match. Congrats, Snatch!

Post Game: Grizzlies 2, Salmon Kings 1

Woo for making the playoffs! The Grizzlies clinched a playoff spot with their regulation win over Victoria. And no, it's not an April Fool's joke.

The Salmon Kings opened up the scoring just over a minute into the 1st period on the power play. Utah was held scoreless during the initial frame, but Captain Kinasewich tied things up with a power play goal of his own early in the 2nd, 1-1.

The defensive battle continued into the 3rd until the Grizzlies, via Matt Sorteberg, knocked one in to take the lead at 8:40 of the period, 2-1. Though Victoria battled back, Utah's defensive play kept them at bay until time expired.

From the official post game:

The Utah Grizzlies (33-28-4-5) defeated the Victoria Salmon Kings 2-1 in regulation Wednesday night in Victoria. The win officially clinches a Utah playoff berth for the fourth time in five years.

Utah took a 2-1 lead as Ryan Kinasewich eluded four Victoria defenders against the wall and fed Matt Sorteberg who walked into the right-wing circle and buried his second goal of the year 8:40 into the third period. [utahgrizzlies.com]

UTA M. Sorteberg (2), 8:40 3rd period (Kinasewich, Hunter); Salmon Kings 1 Grizzlies 2

What Worked Well: Defense
The only goal that the Grizzlies allowed during this game was when they were shorthanded. For 60 minutes, that means a lot of kick ass defense. Koshkinen, while on his game, only saw 24 shots during the contest which shows just how vital the defensive play was to this game. Nicely played, boys.

What Could Have Worked Better: Erm . . .
Well, we're sure there was something. But honestly we love watching these two teams battle it out, so we decided to sit back and enjoy rather than analyze. Anyone wants to pipe in on this, feel free to comment or email.

Who Made the Difference: Matt Sorteberg
We were debating between two defensemen for this: Tim Maxwell and Matt Sorteberg. While Maxwell was all over the defensive end, we decided on Sorteberg for both offensive and defensive contributions. Sorteberg picked up the game winner, played solid in the Grizzlies own end, added to the overall hustle and drive by Utah, and picked up the 3rd star of the game. Awesome.

Stars of the Game:

1. UTA - R. Kinasewich
2. VIC - M. Keetley
3. UTA - M. Sorteberg

Additional Notes:

> Both Ryan Kinasewich (1g, 1a) and Dylan Hunter (2a) had multiple point games.
> Captain Kinasewich tied the record for most goals in a season with his 46th.
> James Sixsmith reached a 9 game scoring streak. Dylan Hunter extended his scoring streak to 11 games.
> This win guarenteed Utah a spot in the playoffs. Isn't it great to see that little x?

Post Game: Grizzlies 7, Condors 4

Utah piled on 7 goals for their 2 points, but the Condors definitely kept things interesting for the Grizzlies during this match up.

Bakersfield struck first for the second night in a row 5:01 into the 1st. The Grizzlies responded on the power play to tie things before the end of the period, 1-1. At the top of the 2nd, Perry gave Utah their first lead of the night, but the Condors were quick to respond and tie it once again, 2-2. The Grizzlies regained their lead with a goal from Clarke, then another from Hunter to build their lead before the end of the middle frame, 4-2.

In the 3rd, Utah increased their lead to 3 with a goal from May. The Condors quickly followed up with two of their own, bringing the deficit to a single goal, 5-4. But the Grizzlies tacked on two more goals, one from Sixsmith and the final goal from Kinasewich, to expand on their lead and seal the deal, 7-4.

From the official post game:

The Utah Grizzlies (32-28-4-5) defeated the Bakersfield Condors 7-4 Saturday night at the E-Center before 7,772 fans. The win guarantees Utah a winning season and their fourth season of .500 or better in the last five years.

UTA J. Sixsmith (24), 18:55 3rd period (Crowder); Bakersfield 4, Grizzlies 6
UTA R. Kinasewich (45), 19:10 3rd period; Bakersfield 4, Grizzlies 7

What Worked Well: Taking the puck to the net
Unfortunately, we don't have a replay of every goal, but a good handful of those goals came from taking the puck deep and right up to the net: Perry, May, Sixsmith - all had goals by swooping down right in front of the net. Nice work.

What Could Have Worked Better: Staying out of the box
The Grizzlies didn't allow Bakersfield as many chances as they did last night, but it's still something that could use a little improvement. There were also a couple of ill-timed penalties, including a shorthanded 5-on-3 situation that probably could have been avoided.

Who Made the Difference: James Sixsmith
While we saw a pretty sweet game from the Grizzlies, James Sixsmith definitely lead the pack tonight. With two goals and an assist on the gamewinner, Sixer was continually in the right place at the right time and propelling all the Grizzlies forward.

Stars of the Game:

1. UTA - J. Sixsmith
2. UTA - D. Hunter
3. UTA - P. Vandermeer

Additional Notes:

> Five Grizzlies had multiple point nights: James Sixsmith (2g, 1a), Dylan Hunter (1g 1a), Ryan Kinasewich (1g, 2a), Peter Vandermeer (2a), and Tim Crowder (2a).
> Mikko Koshkinen stopped 26 out of 30 shots and picked up an assist in the contest.
> Ryan Kinasewich picked up his 45th goal of the season and currently leads the league in goals.

Post Game: Condors 5, Grizzlies 4 (OT)

Stunned. That's definitely how we felt after tonight's contest. From a stellar 1st to losing a lead twice to dropping the game in overtime, the boys ran out of steam in this surreal post-regulation loss.

Bakersfield picked up the first goal of the night. The Grizzlies responded with 3 of their own before the end of the initial frame, starting with a short-handed goal by Perry and extended with a goal by Crowder which increased Utah's lead, 3-1. The Grizzlies picked up a 4th goal in the 1st, but it was waved off for interference. The 2nd period remained scoreless for both teams, but in the 3rd the Condors picked up two quick goals to tie things up. The Grizzlies responded with another Perry goal to regain the lead again, but Bakersfield was ready and tied the game with a shorthanded goal to send it past regulation.

Bakersfield scored the game winner 3:38 into overtime to grab the two points. Utah picked up a point in the loss.

Scoring Summary:

BAK R. Menei (17), 5:22 1st period (McCue, Pielmeier); Condors 1, Grizzlies 0
UTA A. Perry (27), 9:39 1st period (Clarke, Sixsmith); Condors 1, Grizzlies 1
UTA D. Hunter (15), 13:39 1st period (Kinasewich, Vandermeer); Condors 1, Grizzlies 2

BAK S. Pokulok (12), 3:38 Overtime (Ianiero, Regan); Condors 5, Grizzlies 4

What Worked Well: Penalty Kill
Utah killed off 6 of the 7 penalties they saw, including a 5-on-3 situation which ultimately resulted in the shorthanded Perry goal in the 1st. And on a lot of the man advantages for the Condors, Bakersfield was never able to set things up. Very nicely done.

What Could Have Worked Better: 3rd period
By the 3rd period the boys weren't looking to win, they were looking to defend which left a lot of openings and lackadaisical play, and in the end just didn't cut it. We're used to seeing an awesome last 5 minutes of the game, so this was somewhat of a shock. Do it better.

Who Made the Difference: AJ Perry
No matter which way we looked at it, AJ Perry came out on top. 2 goals on 2 SOG, ending the game with a +2 and picking up 2 PIM, Perry was all over offense as well as defense and did a great job on both the PK and the 5-on-5. Perry's another one of those guys like Sixsmith or Hunter who are so damn consistant they can sometimes be overlooked. Just another great job by Perry.

Stars of the Game:

1. UTA - A. Perry
2. BAK - D. Kissel
3. BAK - S. Pokulok

Additional Notes:

> Three Grizzlies had mulitpoint nights: AJ Perry (2g), Ryan Kinasewich (2a), and Peter Vandermeer (2a).
> Mitch O'Keefe stopped 30 of 35 shots in the losing effort.
> James Sixsmith celebrated his 26th birthday tonight and celebrated with an assist. Happy birthday, James!

Post Game: Grizzlies 5, Thunder 2

Utah collected 4 of the 6 points possible from the weekend series which was barely enough to hold onto the 7th and final playoff spot.

Stockton struck first once again to take the early lead over the Grizzlies, but Utah was able to tie things up before the end of the period, 1-1. Also by the end of the 1st, Simon Ferguson had racked up more time in PIM than had just been played (22 minutes) with 2 game misconducts and a minor. Wow. Utah took over in the 2nd, scoring twice on the power play including a Hunter goal at 19:59 of the period to gain the lead, 3-1.

The Thunder grabbed a goal just before the midpoint of the 3rd, but the Grizzlies responded with 2 of their own to end the game 5-2 in Utah's favor.

UTA V. Nikiforov (18), 15:49 3rd period (Sixsmith); Thunder 2, Grizzlies 5

What Worked Well: Goaltending
While Mitch O'Keefe had a pretty decent game last night, it's interesting what allowing one less goal can do for the team. The goaltending from Koshinen made a solid base for the rest of the Grizzlies defense and allowed the boys to focus on their offense.

What Could Have Worked Better: 1st period
Once again the Grizzlies started out shaky, but with the way things ended, we really can't complain. When the boys hit their stride, they made up for any turnovers and missed passes that happened in the 1st.

Who Made the Difference: Mikko Koshkinen
While Vlady Nikiforov and Tim Crowder both had amazing games, we wanted to highlight the ease with which Mikko Koshkinen stops the puck. Stopping 37 shots, he only allowed 2 goals in the contest and really added some confidence to the Grizzlies in their own end. Nicely done.

Stars of the Game:

1. UTA - M. Koskinen
2. STK - C. D'Alvise
3. UTA - V. Nikiforov

Additional Notes:

> Goalie Mikko Koskinen stopped 37 of the 39 shots he saw in the contest for the win.
> Two Grizzlies had multiple point games: Vladimir Nikiforov (1g, 2a) and Tim Crowder (2g)
> Ryan Kinasewich's scoring streak was broken today, while James Sixsmith's road scoring streak contines.
> Simon Ferguson ended the game with 22 PIM which he racked up before the end of the 1st period.

Post Game: Thunder 4, Grizzlies 3

With a 5 minute major looming over most of the 3rd, the Grizzlies were unable to mount a comeback in this one goal game before time expired.

The Thunder struck first once again, but Utah grabbed one late in the period to tie things 1-1. Stockton responded less than a minute later and once more in the final minute of the 1st to regain the lead before the end of the 1st, 3-1. The Grizzlies had a very strong 2nd, picking up the only two goals in the period and collecting 22 SOG to the Thunder's 13. This left the teams tied 3-3 going into the final frame.

Stockton scored on the power play early in the 3rd to regain their lead, 4-3. Utah struggled with a comeback, but a 5 minute Galbraith minor ate up the middle of the period and time expired before the Grizzlies could score again.

From the official post game:

The Stockton Thunder defeated the Utah Grizzlies 4-3 in regulation Saturday night at the Stockton Arena. STK O. Eizenman (20), 3:49 3rd period (Dacosta, Hemingway); Thunder 4, Grizzlies 3

What Worked Well: Killing the Galbraith penalty
Although the game winner came on a bench minor, we still have to say something about the way the PK unit killed off the 5 minute major in the 3rd period. Stockton was never able to set up properly on the man advantage, and the Grizzlies drew a penalty to even things up during the last minute of the kill.

What Could Have Been Better: Staying out of the box
Utah allowed 7 short handed situations during this contest with Stockton converting on 2 of those 7. The boys picked up 11 infractions including a game major and game misconduct from Galbraith nearing the end of the 3rd, and a bench minor which ended up in a power play, game winning goal for Stockton. Blah.

Who Made the Difference: Ryan Kinasewich
Ryan was a factor on all 3 Utah goals. Picking up 3 points (1g, 2a), Snatch tied with Hunter for 9 SOG this contest and ended the game with a +1. Kinasewich was the only Grizzly to have a multipoint game. He definitely carried the team tonight. Nicely done.

> Ryan Kinasewich had a multiple point game tallying 1 goal and 2 assists in the match. The captain also extended his scoring streak.
> Mitch O'Keefe stopped 39 out of the 43 shots he saw in the losing effort.
> Brian Kilburg scored his first goal of the season tonight.
> Defenseman Chad Morin made his debut tonight after being signed to an ATO.

Post Game: Grizzlies 6, Thunder 2

Two points down, four to go. As we hoped for in our weekend preview, Utah was definitely in a warrior haze tonight, scoring 6 goals on 29 shots.

Stockton struck first scoring on the power play, but the Grizzlies responded before the end of the period to end the 1st tied, 1-1. In the 2nd, the Grizzlies scored 4 times which included 2 short handed goals from Ryan Kinasewich. Mikko Koshkinen and the Grizzlies' defense held Stockton off the scoreboard to end the period 5-1.

Tom May picked up an early goal in the 3rd period to increase the Grizzlies lead 6-1, but the Thunder picked up a short handed goal 5 minutes later to end the game 6-2 in Utah's favor.

From the official post game:

The Utah Grizzlies scored six unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 in the first period and Islanders rookie prospect Mikko Koskinen stopped 36 of 38 shots in his ECHL debut as Utah (29-27-3-5) defeated the Stockton Thunder (29-25-2-7) 6-2 Friday night in California. [utahgrizzlies.com]

STK M. Robinson (26), 5:18 3rd period (Vanoosten); Thunder 2, Grizzlies 6

What Worked Well: Penalty Kill
Utah only allowed Stockton one goal on the man advantage. The boys were able to come back and kill 5 penalties, including picking up 2 short handed goals from Kinasewich. Nicely done.

What Could Have Been Better: 1st period
The Grizzlies looked a little shaky in the 1st and trailed Stockton in shots on goal, tallying 9 to the Thunder's 15. Fortunately, they were able to come back in the 2nd, but we'd much rather they were able to come out strong and stay strong for the entire 60 minutes.

Who Made the Difference: Dylan Hunter
While Utah's new goalie Koskinen made things look easy and Ryan Kinasewich was in his warrior haze, Dylan Hunter really brings an aspect of consistancy to this hockey team. Picking up two assists, Hunter is amazing at setting things up for his wingers and next to Sixsmith, is one of the most consistant players on the team.

Stars of the Game:

1. UTA - R. Kinasewich
2. UTA - T. May
3. UTA - M. Koskinen

Additional Notes:

> Three Grizzlies had multiple point games: Ryan Kinasewich (2g), Tom May (1g, 1a), James Sixsmith (2a) and Dylan Hunter (2a).
> Mikko Koskinen stopped 36 out of 38 shots in the win.
> Captain Kinasewich broke his season high goal record with his two shorties for 41 goals this season.

Post Game: Grizzlies 4, Thunder 3 (SO)

Kinasewich is back. With a game-tying goal and a game winner, how can we not declare him the reigning champ?

Stockton took the lead 10:06 into the 1st on the power play, after their goalie was injured and replaced with Sorochan. But the Grizzlies were not to be deterred and after a Galbraith punch-in-the-face special, the boys responded with a power play goal of their own from Tom May. Utah then grabbed the lead with Kinsewich's first of the night before the end of the period, 2-1. Both teams weren't able to light the lamp in the second, though Stockton tallyed 14 SOG to Utah's 12. In the 3rd, Stockton picked up two goals to take the lead before Kinasewich picked up one more to tie it with just 3 minutes left in regulation.

After a scoreless overtime, the teams went to a shootout where Kinasewich picked up the the win on the shoulders of Vlady and Perry - and of course, Mitch O'Keefe.

What Worked Well: Penalty Kill
While there were less penalties, we just saw an improvement in the penalty kill from the previous night. The boys were willing to make more sacrifices and had an easier time clearing the puck.

What Could Have Been Better: 3rd period
When the Grizzlies stepped onto the ice in the 3rd, they looked like fail, allowing two Stockton goals before Colley cussed them out properly. We've generally noticed a push in the final 20 as of late, so it was definitely a disappointing change. Glad to see Colley get the boys back on track.

Who Made the Difference: Ryan Kinasewich
2 goals in regulation, including a tying goal that sent things into overtime and the game-winning shootout goal - we really couldn't pick anyone else as our difference maker for this game, though we want to give props to Mitch O'Keefe for his performance. We're excited to see Kinasewich is back. Keep it up, Captain!

Stars of the Game:

2. UTA - D. Hunter
3. STK - K. Czuy

Additional Notes:

> Three Grizzlies had multiple points in the match: Ryan Kinasewich (2g), Dylan Hunter (2a), and Peter Aston (2a).
> James Sixsmith's scoring streak of 13 games was snapped - damn!
> Mitch O'Keefe stopped 36 out of 39 shots in regulation and overtime, then stopped 3 of 5 in the shootout.
> Since Perry was a little too stealthy for us (you'll see what we mean), we've opted to post his shootout goal here and not on YouTube.

Post Game: Thunder 6, Grizzlies 5 (OT)

This was a tough one, but the Grizzlies were able to pick up a point in the loss. Utah came from behind to tie the game twice, then take the lead twice, only to lose in overtime during a short handed situation.

Stockton dominated the initial period, tallying 18 shots to Utah's 10 and scoring the first goal on the power play. Lance Galbraith responded at 13:16 of the 1st with a Utah power play goal. The Thunder regained the lead to end the period 2-1. However, the Grizzlies added a Kinasewich goal 1:05 into the 2nd to tie things once again before Stockton responded, 3-2. Utah mounted another comeback, adding a goal midway through the 2nd from Perry, then another at 16:07 from Sixsmith to take the lead and end the period 4-3 for Utah. Stockton evened it once again on the power play, and after than we're not sure what happened, but Carpentier and Stockton's Hunt declared it time for fisticuffs and threw in some death threats for good measure. Captain Kinasewich regained the lead for the Grizzlies with their own power play goal, 5-4. The Thunder were not to be ignored, picking up one more on the man advantage to send things into overtime, 5-5.

Utah fought to kill a 4-on-3 short-handed situation from a penalty at the end of the 3rd, but to no avail. Stockton scored the sudden death game-winner just 0:45 into overtime to end the game 6-5 in their favor.

From the official post game:

What Worked Well: Perry-Hunter-Kinasewich
We absolutely love this group together. As much as we enjoy (we were going to say adore, but the love theme was a little too much for us) James Sixsmith (who really makes any line work), this is The Line for the Grizzlies. They work like a well-oiled machine and make things happen. If you want to see a gorgeously executed goal, make sure you're watching when these boys are on the ice.

What Could Have Been Better: Controlling rebounds
We saw a lot of good opportunities fall flat because nobody was in position to get the rebound. Not only did this cut down on scoring chances, but more often than not, the boys would get one shot off, then head back down to defend in their own end as Stockton picked up the puck. Do it better.

Who Made the Difference: Brock Wilson
While it seems an unlikely pick due to the offensive domination of this game, Wilson (and also Sorteberg) was constantly in place to cover up holes in the net, snatch up Stockton's rebounds, and push the puck out of the defensive zone. We really noticed a great defensive presence from both Wilson and Sorteberg on the ice during their shifts. Nicely done.

Stars of the Game:

1. UTA - R. Kinasewich
2. UTA - J. Sixsmith
3. STK - M. Robinson

Additional Notes:

> James Sixsmith continues to push his scoring streak higher; he currently sits at 13 games.
> Beau Erickson saw a crazy 44 shots during the match. He stopped 38 of those.
> Six Grizzlies had multipoint games: Ryan Kinasewich (2g, 1a), James Sixsmith (1g, 1a), Peter Aston (2a), AJ Perry (1g, 1a), Lance Galbraith (1g, 1a), and Dylan Hunter (2a).
> Captain Kinasewich seems to be back in the swing of things, leading the team with 2 goals, 1 assist and 8 SOG.
> We weren't really happy with the way the game was called, and listening to the post game, it sounds like everyone on the Utah end concurs.
> Not only did Hunt and Carpentier get into it through the plexiglass, but it sounds like Kevin Colley and Stockton Head Coach Matt Thomas did as well. Fisticuffs!

Weekend Preview: Stockton Thunder

The last time Stockton met up with the Grizzlies at the E-Center, Utah swept the series, ending with a 7-1 victory. We're thinking this is how the Thunder felt during that loss (yes, that's Bates in the net):

However, we think Stockton's going to be a little more prepared to meet the Grizzlies at the E-Center this time around. The Thunder are coming off of a nice break backed by a 7-3 win over Victoria on 3/6 and are looking to keep the Grizzlies from creeping up on them in the standings. Stockton's Perugini is still holding strong at 2nd in the league with a 0.916 SV% and ties for 3rd in the GAA category with 2.70, while James Bates continues to be the most lethal Thunder player against the Grizzlies.

Coming off of a 4 game road losing streak, the Grizzlies have to be pretty happy to be back at home where they are 6-1-0 in their last 7 on their own ice. James Sixsmith continues to lead the pack with an 11 game scoring streak. We'd love to see him extend it tonight, and we're pretty sure he would, too.

The Grizzlies also welcome some new players tonight and hail a returning favorite. Dylan Hunter rejoins the Grizzlies from the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals where he's been since February 11. Welcome back, Hunts! We learned today from Adrian Denny's blog that Friday will be the first full game Snatch, Sixer, and Hunts have played together since November 14. That's a lot of firepower to watch out for.

Three players make their debut on E-Center ice tonight: Peter Vandermeer has been assigned to the Grizzlies by the AHL's Heat, while center Malcolm MacMillan and defenseman Justin Suda have been acquired in a trade with the Toledo Walleye for forward Tony Romano. Tony Romano picked up 4 points (1g, 3a) against the Stockton Thunder in the February 24, 7-1 win, so it will be interesting to see how the new players fill that void. Tony picked up 4 assists and 2 PIM in his first game with the Walleye. Luck, Tony!

Utah will be busy this weekend with three back to back home games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (remember Sunday's game starts at 4:05). And if that wasn't enough to look forward to, the Grizzlies will be auctioning their 3rd jerseys after Friday night's game to benefit St. Jude Children's hospital. Sounds like we're in for a pretty sweet hockey weekend.

Best of luck, boys!

Post Game: Salmon Kings 3, Grizzlies 2 (SO)

The Grizzlies looked to gain 5 of 6 points going into this final match with Victoria. Capturing a win last night, Utah's strategy was to build on the win and increase their current unbeaten streak.

Victoria opened the scoring with under 5 minutes gone in the 1st for the second night in a row. Despite a few power play chances, the Grizzlies had trouble keeping out of the box and tying things up in the initial period. However, AJ Perry was able to light the lamp for Utah nearing the bottom of the 2nd, and Lance Galbraith found the back of the net for his 7th of the season to end the period 2-1 in Utah's favor. Unfortunately, that lead didn't last long as the Salmon Kings scored just 2:06 into the 3rd period to even things up, 2-2. Both teams battled for the lead, but their goaltenders kept them afloat and neither the Grizzlies or the Salmon Kings were able to end the game in regulation.

After another scoreless overtime, the teams went to their third shootout of the series. Utah went 3/5 in the shootout, but Victoria beat O'Keefe in each round to gain the extra point and secure the win.

From the official post game:

The Victoria Salmon Kings (27-17-4-1) defeated the Utah Grizzlies (21-19-2-4) 3-2 in a shootout Saturday night at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The Grizzlies, collected four of a possible six points in the standings on the weekend jaunt to Vancouver Island; going 1-0-0-2 in the three-game series that saw all contests go to shootouts. What Worked Well: Defense joining the rush
We expect this from Maxwell by now, but having Clarke, Aston, Radke and Wilson able to join in or lead the rush is very reminiscent of blueliners from earlier this season. When the defense can do their job and also tally shots on goal, they add an extra push to the offensive unit on the ice. And when you get the offense to step up and help out the defense, we'd have to say the team is starting to look pretty well rounded again.

What Could Have Worked Better: Staying out of the box
22 PIM total for the team, including a Radke triple minor, the Grizzlies racked up an entire period's worth of penalty time. While Victoria matched them infraction for infraction, the Grizzlies managed to negate a couple of those chances with penalties of their own. Add to that the fact that both of Victoria's goals were power play goals and well, what more needs to be said?

Who Made the Difference: Matt Clarke
Not only stellar on defense, Clarke consistantly drove toward the net, leading rush after rush against the Victoria goalie which included a short handed breakaway. Tallying 4 SOG in this contest and ending the game with a +1, we pick Clarke for our difference maker.

1. VIC - L. Irving
2. UTA - M. O'Keefe
3. VIC - J. Sharrow

Additional Notes:

> Captain Kinasewich is the only Grizzly to tally a multipoint game with 2 assists.
> Four Grizzlies extend their scoring streaks: AJ Perry, Ryan Kinasewich, Peter Aston, and Lance Galbraith.
> Utah picks up 4 of 6 points in the series.
> Salmon King's Wes Goldie ties Ryan Kinasewich for the league leader in goals.
> Mitch O'Keefe saves 31 out of 33 in the shootout loss.

Post Game: Salmon Kings 7, Grizzlies 6 (SO)

Utah struck first in this match, scoring just 2:28 into the 1st. Victoria responded with a goal of their own, then gained the lead with a power play goal less than 30 seconds later. At this point, Mitch O'Keefe replaced Erickson between the pipes, but Victoria tacked on another before the end of the period.

The Salmon Kings repeated their performance during the 2nd, opening the period with a goal, but the Grizzlies were able to tack one on of their own 6 minutes later to make it 4-2. Victoria responded, increasing the gap. However, the Grizzlies answered with one of their own to end the period 5-3.

The Grizzlies scored first in the 3rd, bringing them within one goal of tying the game before Victoria captured another goal. But the Grizzlies fought back to tie the game 6-6, gaining a point and sending things into overtime. Victoria won the game in a shoot out.

From the official post game:

The Utah Grizzlies battled back from a 4-1 deficit, a 5-2 hole and finally a 6-4 score with under seven minutes left in regulation to earn a point in a 7-6 shootout loss Wednesday in Victoria to run their unbeaten streak to 2-0-0-1. [utahgrizzlies.com]

What We Think Worked Well: Determination
So, this really isn't a quantifiable aspect, but it was the difference between this game and one from a month ago. A month ago, the prospect of digging themselves out of a 3 goal hole would have been overwhelming, and you could visibly watch them give up somewhere around the midway point of the 2nd period. What a difference tonight's game was. Even though it was a loss, we saw such a turn around in the mental competitiveness of the Grizzlies that we'll take the point with joy and look forward to the next game.

What Could Have Worked Better: Ryan Kinasewich on the shoot out
Maybe it's a tall order, but we just expect more from him, period. When you go 4/4 on an All Star accuracy competition, we're assuming that at least a portion of that would translate over to the shoot out. However, Kinasewich is 0/3 so far this season. We'll make the concession that goalies are looking for him to be a tough shooter, but even so we'd like to see that average improve. He probably would, too.

Who Made the Difference: AJ Perry
There were so many to chose from this game: Brett Parnham who constantly pressured Victoria in their own end, Peter Aston who was on top of both offense and defense, Ryan Kinsewich who went all out to get to the puck and keep plays going; but we like AJ Perry for this one. He tallied 1 goal and 3 assists in this contest, not to mention putting up some nice defensive moves when the team needed it and grabbing the 2nd star of the game. But bottom line: if you're picking up that many points, you're exactly where you're supposed to be, doing exactly what you need to be doing. Nice job, Perry.

Stars of the Game:

1. VIC - R. Gelech
2. UTA - A. Perry
3. VIC - C. Painchaud

Additional Notes:

> Four Grizzlies ended the game with mulitpoint nights: AJ Perry (1 goal, 3 assists), Dylan Hunter (2 goals), Tom May (1 goal, 1 assist), and Ryan Kinasewich (1 goal, 1 assist)
> Five Grizzlies build on their scoring streaks: AJ Perry, Vlady Nikiforov, Tom May, Tony Romano, Peter Aston, and Dylan Hunter.
> Tim Crowder, a Victoria native, ends the contest with an assist, 2 SOG, and a +1.
> Steve McJannet picks up his first point in a Grizzlies jersey with an assist on May's goal.
> As an aside, we were surprised to not see Brett Parnham on the shoot out. Going into the contest, he was the only Grizzly to tally goals in more than one shoot out. AJ Perry joins him after tonight.
> Ryan Kinasewich currently sits as top scorer and top goal scorer in the ECHL with 32 goals and 35 assists for 67 points.

Post Game: Grizzlies 3, Wranglers 1

If Friday's game centered around offense, Saturday's game was all about defense. And if you missed both of these games this weekend, well . . . shame, shame shame on you. What a great way to celebrate Hockey Weekend Across America.

Both teams were held off of the scoreboard during the 1st period. Despite having 3 power plays, Utah was unable to control the puck in the offensive zone and capitalize on the advantage. At the top of the 2nd, Clarke found the back of the net for the first goal of the game. Vegas responded 2 minutes later with a goal of their own to tie things back up.

The score remained tied throughout the 3rd period. With 2 minutes left in the game, Galbraith put it in the net to regain the lead, 2-1. Hunter tacked on an empty netter with the help of Perry and Kinasewich to wrap up the game, 3-1.

From the official post game:

Lance Galbraith knocked in a rebound with 2:01 left in regulation and Beau Erickson stopped 31 of 32 shots to give the Utah Grizzlies a 3-1 win over Las Vegas Saturday night at the E-Center before 7,043 fans. [utahgrizzlies.com]

UTA D. Hunter (11), EN 3rd period (Kinasewich, Perry); Grizzlies 3, Wranglers 1

What We Think Worked Well: Defense
This was an excellent defensive game for both teams. The Grizzlies have had some struggles with their defense lately, particularly in terms of holding a lead, so it was nice to see them settle down and play this type of game. We saw a lot more pressure put on the opposing team when they had the puck in their own zone, rather than waiting for the puck to get to neutral ice and beyond and some beautiful goaltending. A good job by all.

What Could Have Worked Better: Power Play
We've said this already, they know it needs work, and we don't want to be this guy:

Who Made the Difference: Beau Erickson
Everyone agrees on this; Beau was past amazing. Saving all but one of the 32 shots that came near him, Beau turned cartwheels (sometimes literally) to keep Utah in this game and claim his first win in a Grizzlies jersey. The Grizzlies definitey couldn't have done this without his star of the game performance.

2. UTA - Beau Erickson
3. UTA - Matt Clarke

When the hell did Utah trade Mark Pavli?

Mark Pavli was traded to the Stockton Thunder on Thursday. WTF?

So, we've had it driven into our skulls all season that the ECHL is a developmental league and trades happen. That's fine; we expect that. However, it seems that the only things developing on the Grizzlies' end are Colley's skills as a Wall Street day trader.

Think about it. Stoflet getting traded for Prokop who was traded for future considerations, Shea Guthrie traded to Florida for rights to an AHL player. Jason Dale was due to higher powers, but really . . . We follow this team religiously, consistantly, daily, but we don't even recognize most of the roster anymore.

Hell, we'll admit it. We're biased. We liked Pavli a lot. It was nice to see someone playing their guts out during every shift over that last slump when over half the team couldn't be bothered to show up. We won't claim he was the best player or having the greatest season, but every time Pavli was on the roster, we knew we'd have something to watch. He stuck up for his teammates, played a gritty, hard game, and seemed incredibly easy-going with fan interactions. It would be an understatement to say that he has been a fan favorite during his time here in Utah. And while we understand that a team can't be based around fan expectations (see Calgary, Theo Fleury), the fans should be able to expect some balance from their hockey club.

Yes, we are in a developmental league; we're feed for the farm teams. But in our opinion, the organization also has a responsibility to make their own playoffs, compete for the Kelly Cup, and allow the community to identify with their home team. How can we possibly identify with our team if, as dedicated fans, we have no idea who's stepping onto the ice to represent said team?

Just from the rumor mill, it sounds like this was a hard trade to make for everyone involved and was necessary due to the influx of contract players from the higher leagues. It still pretty much ruined our day.

Luck, Pavli!

Other Transactions:

Defenseman Peter Aston was assigned to Utah by the Florida Panthers last week. In his debut with the Grizzlies on 1/22/10 at the E Center, he tallied two assists for a multipoint night. So far, so good for the blueliner.

Jake Gannon and James Sixsmith have been called up to the AHL. Gannon will join the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Sixsmith has been loaned to the Milwaukee Admirals. Luck, Gannon and Sixsmith!

Dylan Hunter returned to the ice on the 23rd against Ontario and proved once again how essential he is to the team. Hunter picked up two assists in his first game back.

The Grizzlies have signed defenseman Chris Allen to a contract. Allen has been playing with the EIHL in the UK this past season, but has a strong background in the NHL, AHL, and ECHL. He will also add some height to the team average, standing tall at 6'3". Nice.

Post Game: Reign 5, Grizzlies 3.

Ontario drew first blood with a short handed goal 1:44 into the 1st. Utah was able to hold the Reign's tally to a single goal through the rest of the period, then opened the 2nd with two goals of their own to take the lead. However, a minute later, the Reign tallied two goals to tie it, then regain the lead. Late in the 2nd, Ontario added an additional goal to end the period 4-2.

Utah attempted to battle back but was not able to bridge the 2 goal gap, even with the help of a 5-on-3 power play. Both Ontario and Utah scored on power plays late in the 3rd to end the game in Ontario's favor, 5-3.

From the official post game:

The Grizzlies had 1:21 of five-on-three power-play time to start the third period, but were unable to score and the Grizzlies then preceded to commit three minors, one of which was taken advantage of by the Reign who buried a goal to extend their lead to 5-2 at 11:15 of the third period. UTA A. Perry (16), 5:36 2nd period (Kinasewich, Maxwell); Reign 1, Grizzlies 2
ONT M. Howe (3), 6:04 2nd period (Pelech, Martens); Reign 2, Grizzlies 2

UTA R. Kinasewich (28), 18:33 3rd period (Hunter); Reign 5, Grizzlies 3

What We Think Worked Well: Perry-Hunter-Kinasewich
This line was responsible for all goals scored during this game, 7 of the 8 points earned by the Grizzlies, and 11 out of 31 SOG. We can't deny (nor would we want to) that this line works incredibly well together.

What Could Have Worked Better: Power Play
The Grizzlies have a sizzling power play when they're on, but when it's off, it's completely past the mark. Both Ontario and Utah went 1/6 on the power play and neither were able to capitalize on 5-on-3 situations. However, the Grizzlies had a hard time controling the puck, keeping it in, and even allowed a shorty during their first power play of the night. Maybe we've been spoiled, but compared to the last few games, this definitely could have worked much better for the Grizzlies.

Who Made the Difference: Brock Wilson
Even though we really can't say enough about Captain Kinasewich's star-of-the-game performance in this game, we have to give props to Brock Wilson for his crazy, long-ass, helmet-less shift. He played a good game and took care of business. Check it out:

Definitely in the top 3 best game moments for us (other two: the first Kinasewich goal, Hughes sticking up for himself). Props to Brock.

Stars of the Game:

3. UTA - R. Kinasewich

Additional Notes:

> Ryan Kinasewich, Dylan Hunter, and AJ Perry all racked up multipoint nights.
> Overall, the Grizzlies tallied 31 SOG; Ryan Kinasewich led the team with 8 of the 31.

Game Day in Alaska and other Grizzlies news

Game today: Alaska Aces.

Galbraith makes his first return to Aces ice tonight with the Grizzlies since the trade on December 27, and Evan Kotsopoulos plays his first game against Utah as an Ace. Both Utah and Alaska will receive some help tonight with players returning from the AHL. Dylan Hunter will meet the Grizzlies in Alaska, and the Aces should be expecting Mike Walsh from the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. Former Grizzlies forward Walsh was part of the recent trade with Alaska and was released from his PTO with Grand Rapids yesterday. We also heard a rumor that Bartley could make an appearance with the Grizzlies soon.

AJ Perry will stay in Utah due to illness and keep newly acquired left wing Patrick Asselin company, according to Yo's game day blog. And apparently, Tom May is the boy to watch for tonight as he scored 3 goals in 3 November games against Alaska.

On Monday, Alaska snapped Victoria's double digit winning streak in the last match of their 3 game series with the Salmon Kings. The Aces are looking for another win to build on as the Grizzlies try to stop their own recent losing streak.

While we're not looking for excuses - we definitely think the boys need to show up to play - we're wondering if the illness/flu that's been going around has affected performance at all.

Either way, it should be a good game to watch if Utah decides to play.

Don't forget to read Denny's official game day blog.

Utah Grizzlies visit St. George

The Grizzlies stopped by the grand opening of the new Dixie Igloo Ice Center in St. George on their way to Vegas last week. The new Dixie Igloo is the first ice rink to be built in St. George and was designed to meet NHL-rink regulations.

Arriving in the evening, the Grizzlies had a team skate with fans and signed autographs before continuing to Vegas.

Other News

USANA is now the Utah Grizzlies' official supplement provider. Not really interesting news, but news nonetheless. Maybe they can help with the illness going around . . .

We missed Grizzlies Live again this week. Fail.

Luck, Grizzlies!
